Part I Tags:

1. What is a Title Tag and what purpose does it serve?

The title tag is the main text that describes an online document and is required for all HTML/XHTML documents.  It briefly describes the document (70 characters or less) and is used in browsers, search engine result pages, and anchor text links in external websites.

2. What should an H1 tag contain?

Every page should contain one H1 tag, 150 characters or less, which should contain the most important keywords for that page, and preferably in order of priority.

3. Where are meta-descriptions located and what purpose do they serve?

Meta descriptions are HTML attributes that provide concise explanations of the contents of web pages and are commonly used on search engine results pages (SERPs) to display preview snippets for a given page.

4. What is a Meta tag?

A Meta tag is a special HTML tag that provides information about a Web page. Unlike normal HTML tags, meta tags do not affect how the page is displayed. Instead, they provide information such as who created the page, how often it is updated, what the page is about, and which keywords represent the page’s content. Many search engines use this information when building their indices.

5. Alt-tags are typically assigned to certain components on a web page. What are these components and why are alt-tags important?

Alt tags, more properly known as alt attributes, are used in HTML/XHTML documents to provide alternative information for an image if a user for some reason cannot view it, e.g., slow connection, src attribute error, screen reader user (visually-impaired)
