Ani Marketing Magic in 2013

Happy New Year!

What a roller coaster ride 2012 was, and frankly, I’m glad it’s over.  I took 2 weeks off over the holidays, and it was wonderful.  I’m fully recharged and have spent the past couple of weeks reviewing numerous conversations about the future of marketing.  Undeniably, the phrase that wafts in and out of most conversations is social media.  Everyone knows what it is, and lots of people can help increase your number of followers, but there’s no universal or easy answer on how we use social media to make money.  In fact, like any marketing initiative, there is no direct correlation between social media site followers and revenues.  It’s another reason for the marketing naysayers to “just say no”.  Or is it?

While social media sites are figuring out how to maximize their value, many companies want to make sure they’re taking advantage of the well-trained social media site members.   Why should they not follow your company, in addition to everyone else’s?  Then, when we uncover the magical formula on how to make money, there’s much less of a barrier to entry.  It’s a smart, relatively inexpensive, and easy longer-term branding play.  Oh, and by the way, don’t be fooled by the functionality of today’s social media sites.  These current apps aren’t the ones that will be popular in our future; they’re the forefathers.  That’s common knowledge.  The mystery is that no one can foresee what the future apps will look like.  The smart companies, though, are already established on today’s sites, standing by for tomorrow.

But back to today, if you are committed to using social media now, there is a way to take advantage of them, which is not being exploited.  Once you’ve found your social media followers, why not do something with them, i.e., start a sales/marketing campaign with a call-to-action or differentiated messaging?  It sounds simple enough, but it is easy to forget or ignore.  In fact, when companies don’t properly incorporate campaign objective(s) and current competitive climates into their marketing communications, the resulting second-rate efforts often result in that commonly-heard phrase, “marketing isn’t worth it.”  In these cases, they would be right.  If you are not smart about your marketing campaigns by having consistent messaging, regular communications, and something memorable, then marketing doesn’t work.  It’s true for any type of campaign, including those on social media.

“Networking is not about hunting. It is about farming.  It’s about cultivating relationships.
Don’t engage in ‘premature solicitation’.
You’ll be a better networker if you remember that.”
