If You Don't Ask..

Recently I was chatting about business opportunities and how they come about. We know that in this economy many people are moving forward with good business ideas that they have properly developed, as discussed in my last blog (Growing Pains). But sometimes there are other opportunities right under our nose, and we either fail to recognize them or feel that we are overstepping boundaries. Take for example my friend’s story.

My friend had a successful consulting practice and was a long-time friend of the owner of a large corporation. After they both retired, it somehow came up in conversation that the owner of the large corporation was surprised that the consultant never approached him for business, but assumed that his friend was not interested. The consultant looked surprised and told his friend he had always considered bringing up the subject, but did not want to jeopardize their friendship. They laughed, realizing a missed opportunity, now long gone.

So, despite our concerns, it may not hurt to ask someone about new opportunities. If the question is asked in an appropriate way, there should be no harm done even if there isn’t mutual interest. On the other hand if your notion was right, it could lead to new leads or even new business for both of you.

And remember, if you don’t ask, you’ll never know!

All my best,
