Setting Expectations…

My girlfriend and I were at a bar the other night, and she really clicked with one of our fellow bar mates – thank goodness for me, his wingman was fun too. At the end of the evening, my friend and this gent exchanged cards, and they promised to chat within the week. We flew out of the bar at a high altitude, her spirits soaring a little higher.  Needless to say it all crashed a week later when there was no contact from either side.

This is an old familiar story, and we all know the lack of follow-up happens for a multitude of reasons. But why do people feel the need to set unrealistic expectations? This is true both personally and professionally. Your word represents your brand value.  When you extend a promise to someone — whether it’s a friend, an employee, or a customer — the quality of your follow-through tends to leave a lasting impression.  So make sure it’s a good one – wingman or not!

All my best,

P.S. I was just quoted in the New York Times as being a small business survivor in this tough economy – check it out!
