…and don't forget to say 'thank you'…

I just spent Thanksgiving with my wonderful nephews. I had a great time, but I think they may have had some misgivings about their Aunty turning into a Miss Manners nightmare. I mean, poor things, how many times did they hear me say, “And what do you say to the nice lady?” And when my sister started giving me ‘the look’, I had to step back for a moment of introspection.

Why is this ‘thank you’ so important to me? Ahh, of course, relationship building. These days we seem to be addicted to technology and processing as much information as possible. We forget that there are people behind these messages. Even in a room full of people, we often forget to look someone in the eye, smile, and let them know that we value the time they’re giving us. And remember that when you are in a non face-to-face situation, people still hear the smile in your voice or read between the lines in your written communications. So it’s really more than the ‘thank-you’; it’s what the ‘thank you’ represents.

This holiday season, don’t forget to say ‘thank you’ to all the special people in your life, and try to value the personal time you have with them. It’ll behoove both of you in the long run!

Happy holidays to you, and thanks for all of your support in 2007!

All my best,
